Who I Am

I am Edward L. Blum, a second-generation Bay Area native and resident. In more than 45 years as an attorney, I have handled a broad spectrum of cases involving both judicial as well as negotiated resolutions — matters ranging from forcefully and extensively litigated conflicts to difficult legal issues resolved through collaborative methods. My practice has focused on litigation of business and property disputes for many years, but now much of my work focuses on transactional matters and mediation. Regardless of the approach needed, I know what it takes to resolve a matter efficiently and effectively, and to foresee problems before they occur.

I am AV-rated* under Martindale Hubbell's peer rating system and have also been recognized as a Super Lawyer by California Super Lawyer's Magazine in 2015 and 2016. I am active in the legal community, having served as a judge pro tem in Alameda County, and am currently a court-appointed arbitrator, mediator and discovery facilitator, and have lectured on civil procedure and trial practice through the Center for Continuing Legal Education.

What I Do

My Berkeley law office represents clients from throughout the East and West Bay Areas in a range of matters. I guide people through commercial and residential real estate transactions. I also help them start businesses and structure business transactions, helping them handle matters in a way that both provides the best result possible while reducing the risk of future litigation. I am versed in structuring transactions, corporate and partnership buy-sell agreements as well as general estate planning.

While my emphasis is on structuring of real estate and business opportunities, I also handle selected litigation cases in those areas, and offer litigation counseling for people who have become enmeshed in extensive litigation and would like a second opinion, or assistance in evaluating their alternatives. I can review the facts of your case and help you make challenging choices. Litigation counseling can be a good option for people who find themselves in over their heads — who would like to end the stress and financial burden of going to court, but who aren't sure how.

I have been a mediator for more than 20 years, and I use my extensive litigation background to inform my mediation practice. Guiding parties toward consensus through mediation, I help them reach agreement by understanding the potential outcomes if their cases were to proceed to trial.
