Who I Am

I am Edward L. Blum, a second-generation Bay Area native and resident. In more than 45 years as an attorney, in which I handled a broad spectrum of cases, my practice is currently focused on transactional matters involving business and real estate.  My experience as a litigator has shaped my approach to business formations, agreements and real estate transactions.  I focus on ways to avoid disputes that may arise in the future.  Agreements that clearly spell out the parties' rights and duties are the single most important way to avoid future problems.  It comes from having the skill to foresee problems before they occur.

I am AV-rated* under Martindale Hubbell's peer rating system and have also been recognized as a Super Lawyer by California Super Lawyer's Magazine in 2015, 2016 and 2017. I am active in the legal community, having served as a judge pro tem in Alameda County, and am currently a court-appointed arbitrator, mediator and discovery facilitator, and lectured on civil procedure and trial practice through the Center for Continuing Legal Education.

What I Do

I represent clients from throughout the East and West Bay Areas in a range of matters. I help people form businesses, negituate ownership and buy-sell agreements with their co-owners, provide guidance in structuring business and real estate transactions, including residential real estate. My goal is to handle matters in a way that reduces the risk of future litigation. I am also versed in general estate planning.

While my emphasis is on structuring of real estate and business opportunities, I also offer counseling for people who are thinking about filing lawsuits or have become enmeshed in extensive litigation and would like a second opinion, or assistance in evaluating their alternatives. I can review the facts of your case and help you make challenging choices. Litigation counseling can be a good option for people who find themselves in over their heads — who would like to end the stress and financial burden of going to court, but who aren't sure how.

Though I no longer handle court cases, my background as a courtroom lawyer has given me insight into ways to avoid court.  I have been a mediator for more than 20 years, and I use my extensive litigation background to help my clients avoid controversy by understanding the potential outcomes if their cases were to proceed to trial.
